Book Review by Aubrie Liddell, Library Director

“Things We Never Got Over” by Lucy Score was a recent addition to our shelves, made popular by TikTok– this book is perfect for fans of Colleen Hoover, Jojo Moyes, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and other romance writers. I read the first book, “Things We Never Got Over” in late 2022 after a friend recommended it to me, I LOVED it. Between the cliche girl-next-door and grumpy bad boy romance troupe and the thrilling plot-twists, I could not put it down. I’m a sucker for cliche romance novels and this one was beautifully written with a fun and charismatic undertone.

Tattooed and brooding town bad boy Knox Morgan prefers to live life alone, not including his basset hound Waylon. He doesn’t do relationships and definitely doesn’t do drama; especially not a run-away bride.

Enter Naomi Witt, a woman who just fled from her wedding and running to the rescue of her evil twin. She found herself in Knockemout, Virginia, a small southern town whose residents prefer to settle disagreements with fists and beer. Unfortunately for Naomi, her twin, sticking to he evil tendencies, runs off with Naomi’s car and money leaving Naomi stranded in Knockemout with her 11-year old niece Waylay. She’s now stuck in town with no car, no cash, no job, no house, and a kid she now has to look after.

While Knox doesn’t do drama, he can’t help but offer help to Naomi after her life turns upside down. Help her back on her feet and then retreat to his solitary life as the town’s bad-boy, at least that’s the plan, but we all know plans don’t turn out the way they should.

I would recommend this book to anyone who’s a fan of romance, although the book is a bit cliche in it’s plot, the writing is executed well and keeps you on your toes. The character development and relationships between all characters is great. This book is perfect to curl up on the couch with a cup of coffee and read. And better yet, the sequel to this book just came out! “Things We Hide From The Light” just released in February and is sure to be another great romance book, this time between two side characters in the first book; and this time, you get a lovable, handsome cop as the love interest. I just started this second novel and already can tell it’ll be added to my favorites shelf.
